National Bike Month

We think any time of year is the best time of year to start riding your bike more. But why not make a statement and pedal your bike as part of a movement? May is National Bike Month and May 14th to the 18th is National Bike to Work week. Established in 1956 and sponsored by the League of American Bicyclists, National Bike Month is a chance to showcase the many benefits of bicycling — and encourage more folks to giving biking a try. Below is our guide help you get started so you can pedal in unison with others from coast to coast and promote cycling as a fun and healthy activity. We've also put together a list of some essential items that can make using your bike for utility easy. Check it out here.

HOW / PLAN & TEST YOUR ROUTE

There are many useful tools available to help you plan a safe route to work. Sites like MapMyRide or Google Maps make it easy to find bicycle-friendly directions. Give your route a weekend test run ahead of time so that you arrive at work happy and on time.

WHY / IT'S GOOD FOR YOUR WALLET

Riding to work is less expensive both per mile and per year! Not only will you save on fuel costs, auto maintenance, and insurance costs, you'll experience indirect gains as well. By improving your physical well-being, you'll take fewer sick days, and improve your overall productivity.

HOW / PACK UP & SLEEP WELL

Being prepared is key to successful commute. Inflate your tires, give your bike a quick safety check, and pack your bag at night to avoid feeling rushed in the morning. A little advanced planning makes commuting simple and stress-free.

WHY / YOU'RE SAVING THE WORLD!

Sound dramatic, right? But it's a fact that cycling rather than driving is great for our planet. By choosing to go by bike, you're helping to reduce the amount of greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 200 kilograms per mile. Not only will you breathe cleaner, fresher air locally, but you'll also do your part to take care of your environment.
